Are All of Your Dates Like the Movie Groundhog Day?

In the movie Groundhog Day the character Phil played by Bill Murray, lives the same day over and over again until he learns an important lesson about himself and changes how he treats people. He has lots of adventures but never escapes from Groundhog Day until he changes a few simple things. The point of all this is that sometimes our dating gets stuck in a rut and we keep repeating the same mistakes and never move on to a hot first date, true dating success and a happy relationship. So, are all of your dates like the movie Groundhog Day?

Dating Patterns That Do Not Work Out

Cosmopolican.uk discusses 8 serial dating patterns and how to break out of these Groundhog Day scenarios.

“Dating can be tough. It can feel like we are going around in circles and things just aren’t changing,” says Jennifer Boon, a life coach and author of Survive & Thrive: Dating and Being Single. “There are some dating patterns we can all fall into without realising, but they can hold us captive in a cycle of not getting anywhere while the people we’re attracting ending up being spookily similar each time.

“It fits that in life we get into ruts and ways of being without knowing or considering that our thinking and behaviour is creating the patterns we’re following. These ruts hold us back and don’t help us get to where we want to be.” Jennifer explains the serial dating patterns many people are guilty of – and how to break the cycle.

Here are several of their patterns and our suggestions for how to break them.

Always dating the same type of person

If you always do this and it never works out you need to think about what it is that you are looking for when dating and make appropriate changes.

Excessive Codependency

The article calls this merging with your new friend. When we fall in love we give a little of ourselves to the other person. When we do this in excess it is codependency and can lead to an unhappy and abusive relationship. Stay true to yourself.

Putting Everything Else Aside in Order to Find Love

This may work for a couple of day or even weeks but is a recipe for unhappiness down the road. As with the codependency problem you are not being true to yourself. Eventually you need to take care of yourself and your own business while also engaging in a relationship. Find room for love within the confines of your normal life.

Letting Others Decide for You

We once wrote about dating advice from the crowd in which people online who do not know you proceed to tell you how to run your life. Sometimes you get good advice this way but think long and hard about making life decisions based on ideas that come from strangers.

Just Dating Online

Online dating has been a game changer. We find it much easier to meet a lot more people and hopefully a lot more people whom we will really like. But the point of online dating is to meet the right person. So, if that person walks up to you at work, at a party or while shopping at the supermarket do not walk away from a good thing.
